Getting To Know You... A Character Interview

Updated: Dec 10, 2019

Getting to know you!

I hope that song's in your head now! (Muhwahahaha!)

Or rather, more than getting to know you, getting to know the protagonist of my new novel!

That's right, it's time for a character interview!

She doesn't look anything like this, by the way.

So onto the interview! Be sure to leave any questions to have for Sharon in the comment at the end!

-----

Let's start things out easy. What's your name?

Sharon.

Hi Sharon. And what did you eat for breakfast this morning?

Just coffee. I was going to have some eggs, but didn't.

You weren't hungry?

Just didn't feel like it. Made them for Albert though.

Oh, that was nice of you to cook for him. He's your husband?

Yeah. My - my husband.

And do you like to cook?

Like it? I don't know. I never thought of it before. I guess it's okay.

What about laundry? Who does the laundry at your house?

Me, of course. Who else would do it?

And gardening? Do you have a garden?

I have flower beds. It's interesting; I was just talking to Bonnie - that's a neighbor of mine - about putting in a garden or, well, something, in our backyard. So maybe. My mom and my grandma were great gardeners.

Are you close with your family?

I don't understand what that means. My parents are my parents.

Are you easy to get along with?

I try to be.

Are you outgoing or shy? Loud or quiet?

I don't know. I try not to be too much trouble, so I guess quiet. I wish I was more outgoing. My cousin, Melinda, she's pretty groovy. She's really outgoing. No-nonsense, you know?

Indeed. And you're not like that?

Certainly not.

Interesting. Would you care to elaborate?

Not really.

Okay. So, who was the last person you held hands with?

That's an odd question.

Yes it is. Care to answer?

Well, I'm sure it was Albert. Maybe when we danced together at our wedding? Yes, you kind of hold hands when you dance. That must be it.

When was your wedding?

About six months ago.

Ah! Newlyweds! Congratulations!

Yes. Thank you.

So tell me all about it. Was it a nice wedding?

Yeah, actually. It was.

And how did he propose? Down on one knee?

No, we were in his car. We talked about it, and he asked, and I said yes.

That's still lovely. And married life has been good?

Sure. I mean, yes. Albert's a good man.

That's very important. So besides enjoying married life, what else do you do?

What do you mean?

Like, for a job?

Oh. I'm married.

Yeah, but I mean outside of the home. What do you do for a career?

My husband has a job.

You never leave the house?

Of course I do. Oh, you mean like, work. I volunteer at the hospital.

Do you like working with sick people?

Yeah. I took some nursing classes for a bit, even. I used to have this doll, and I'd pretend to take her temperature, and check her ears and throat and pulse.

Did you ever think about being a doctor?

Of course not.

Why not?

You're kidding, right?

Um, no. But we can change the subject if you want.

Whatever you like.

Just a few more questions I think. What's your mom like?

Quiet. She's lovely, hardworking. She took care of us really well; and yes. She is quiet. A good mom.

And your dad?

He took care of us. A good provider. He... um... he had high expectations for us. He knows the way he wants things to be. Figured that anything worth doing was worth doing right, and he tried to instill that kind of... approach... in us, I suppose? It is important to him that everything is perfect. And he's no-nonsense.

Like that cousin you mentioned? Melinda?

No. No. Definitely not. Nothing like Melinda. I guess... Well, I mean, they both always wanted the best for me. But that's the only thing they have in common.

So what are your plans for tonight?

My plans? I'm going to go home and start supper for Albert. It's mid-afternoon already, you know. I'm thinking meatloaf again. It's one of his favourites.

You're very considerate. Okay, one last question. Is there anything about you that no one else knows?

....

Sharon? Do you want me to repeat the question?

No.

No, there isn't anything, or no I don't need to repeat the question?

Yes. I mean, no. I mean... Look, everyone has secrets, right? I'm just like everybody else that way.

I suppose so.

Right. Okay. I'm sorry. I don't mean to be rude, but are you finished with me? Am I able to leave now?

Of course. Thanks for answering our questions.

Thank you. Have a pleasant day.
