The First Time I Died
Release Date: October 1, 2024
A woman struggles with the odd behavior of her precious son and the feeling that something may be wrong with "Christopher". An old man listens to a country singer and remembers his younger days two-stepping across the dance floor. In the 1940s, a telephone operator provides testimony as a witness to a violent public attack. After thirty-five years on the police force, a detective tries to find the culprit behind a recent murder. At the centre of the case is only a description of the car the victim was driving. A young man revisits both an old dog-racing track and memories of his late father. A customer service employee in the city is content in her young, quiet life until she begins receiving gifts and attention from an unknown admirer. After her death, a young woman finds a new vague form of existence. But even that may be temporary.
The thread that connects these stories is unnerving, the same kind that tightens around your heart when you watch shadows lengthen at night, the kind that shivers and prickles through you when haunting legends are whispered around campfires. That questioning, creeping feeling is sewn through each of these stories. Whether horror, drama, crime, or even science fiction, whether grounded in the natural or seeping into the supernatural, MacDonald gives us a collection that is at times frightening, at times heartfelt, but always, somehow, human.
To Air The Laundry
Release Date: May 21, 2019
In The Girl with the Empty Suitcase, we met Danielle, who, among other things, has a complicated relationship with her mother. This is her mother's story... before she is a mother.

Sharon gasped, clutching at the edges of the dream before it evaporated into the black of early morning. Albert blew the remembrance further out of reach with each soft snore.
--------------
It’s a late spring day in 1969 and Sharon has been married eleven months. For eleven months she’s woken up and made her husband his coffee and meals. She’s cleaned his dishes, his house, his laundry. She’s filled her days in her effort to be a good wife.
But Sharon has a secret, something even Albert doesn’t know. It’s a secret she’s buried beneath years and silence and sad smiles.
Trying to reconcile her past decisions with her current realities, and her relationships and promises with her own wants, Sharon stumbles through her day. She faces questions, uncertainties, conflicts, routines, and above all, her own truths.
----------------
At times painful, at others triumphant, but always sincere, this emotional story offers an unflinching window into a single day in a time not far removed from our own, and a woman grappling with the secret that shapes her life.

The Girl With The Empty Suitcase
Release Date: November 1, 2017
My debut novel is a piece of women's literary fiction, following one woman through her life. The reader gets to have glimpses of significant moments that make up her identity, her relationships, and her life:

The suitcase sat at the top of Danielle’s closet for years, holding memories, promises, and undeveloped film.
From struggling with homework, to her final farewells with her parents, this is the story of one woman’s life and loves. Through hopes and laughter, heartaches and tears, Danielle is shaped by the family, friends, and romances around her.
This emotional story gives us a woman, a window through whom we may see our own realities, our own challenges, our own quiet triumphs.

PRAISE FOR THE GIRL WITH THE EMPTY SUITCASE
FROM MARI'S BOOK REVIEWS:
Far from a fairy-tale romance, this book still conveys a heroic and enduring love. I was inspired by this down-to-earth, relate-able couple and MacDonald’s care for them.
FROM GOODREADS:
A beautifully honest story of two lives intertwining through the very relatable obstacles of life!
FROM AMAZON:
This book has the distinct feel of turning the pages of an old photo album created by a gifted photographer. Highly recommended reading.
PRAISE FOR TO AIR THE LAUNDRY
FROM MARI'S BOOK REVIEWS:
As understated as quiet Sharon, the writing conveys the power of suppression. It becomes a force larger than her life, reaching out of the book to touch our pasts, our secrets. [...] A literary historical fiction, To Air the Laundry conveys with sensitivity and grace a struggle common to many women, through one woman’s experience.
FROM GOODREADS:
Krysta MacDonald writes about being haunted. Haunted by decisions, choices and judgement. A page turner from 5 a.m. through the day. The reader gets to experience "a day in the life". An intense read with piercing, insightful attention to the main character, Sharon.

FROM AMAZON:
MacDonald tells a story that contains tragedy and triumph [...] This story was easy to follow and I could get a glimpse of the depths of the characters. I enjoyed this, and found it was also a reflection and life discovery for the characters. I look forward to reading more by this author.
