Some (Modern) Funny and Foolish Reads.

Updated: Dec 10, 2019

I have mixed feelings about April Fool's Day. I like a good prank as much as the next person, but as a teacher, I am so happy when I see that the first of April every year falls on a non-school day.

In honour of the day though, and the laughs that I'm sure will be - and have been - had today, I have compiled a list of my favourite modern funny reads.

(I decided to just include modern reads, because I could never choose from the funny bits of Shakespeare or from Mark Twain or Charles Dickens!)

So here you are, again, in no particular order...

The ultimate chick-lit book. I read most of this in a Jacuzzi bath while on vacation in Mexico, and I literally laughed out loud. My favourites were her drunken diary entries.

Before it was one of the greatest movies ever (which I am actually currently teaching to my junior high film class), it was this hilarious book. I dare you not to laugh.

A year or two ago my husband and I listened to an audio version of this while we were driving across a few provinces. I remember laughing so hard in parts I actually wondered if crazy laughter counted as driving under the influence. There aren't many funny books that can also teach you the secret of life, but this is the one.

One of my brothers bought me this book for this past Christmas, saying that he wasn't sure about it, but thought I might like it. Oh my goodness, is it ever funny. Not only did I laugh reading much of this book, but I laughed so hard my sides hurt.

Basically anything by David Sedaris should be on this list. This just happens to be the most recent one I've read, My favourite funny books are the ones that also touch your heart strings, and this is Sedaris' specialty.

What do you think about my choices for modern funny reads? Did I miss any that you think should have made my list?
