Books for Mothers and Daughters

Updated: Dec 10, 2019

Happy Mothers' Day!

I am fortunate enough to not only have my own mother (don't you love the above picture of us together at my wedding?), and my grandmothers, who are so dear to me, but also my wonderful mother-in-law. Plus so many friends who are moms, and those women who take on the role of moms... I hope that all of you have an amazing day!

On today's blog post, in honour of all of those amazing women who are mothers, I am looking at five of the most significant mother-daughter relationships in books.

Perhaps my favourite book on this list, Marmee's relationship with her four very different daughters - her four little women - is pretty darned admirable. She is strong, personable, and caring.

If Marmee is the model mother, another strong woman, Ingrid, may be the opposite. I do believe that she wants what she believes is best for her daughter, Astrid, but that often comes across in less than ideal ways, as their connection is tenuous through Ingrid's imprisonment.

Ma Ingalls is another strong woman. This mother raises our protagonist, Laura, and her siblings with fairness and heart. Every little girl should read these books, and if her mother reads them or gives them to her, then all the better.

This book looks at our mothers and all of the things that word means. This book follows 14-year-old Lily, her maid, and the three bee-keeping sisters that they settle with. Lily looks for answers about her own mother, and the other women who act motherly.

This book follows four Chinese women who are recent immigrants to the United States. They meet regularly, and it is through these meetings that they address their connections between themselves and their American-born daughters.

What books have I missed?

Are you reading a themed book this Mothers' Day? Are you giving (or hoping for) a book today?

Happy Mothers' Day to all those mothers out there!
